SharePoint 2010 Architectural Changes

I would like to take this opportunity to flash few points on SharePoint 2010 Architectural Changes explained by James Petrosky, at SharePoint 2010 Ignite Training at Microsoft, TX

Minimum Software Requirements:

  • SharePoint Server 2010 is 64-bit only
  • Requires 64-bit Windows Server 2008 with SP2 or 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Requires 64-bit SQL Server 2008 X64 SP1 CU2 or 64-bit SQL Server 2005 x64 SP3 CU3

Logical Architecture Changes

  • Services “a La Carte” enables far more flexibility in planning farms and services – SSP no more exists replaced by Service Applications such as Excel Service, BDC Service, OWA Service, Search Service etc. can be individually consumed from any Web Application.
  • Improved application integration and support – Better LOB Integration, Partially trusted code hosting
  • Large list improvement, allowing libraries and list to be much larger

Physical Topology Changes

  • Architectural Components -
    • WFE Changes – Mostly Optimization changes such as New Client protocol (transports only delta), Throttling feature to better manage peak loads, New Usage logging and Health Data
    • Application Server changes – Many more services can run on AS, User code service is separate isolated service that can run on one to many servers in the farm to isolate sandbox code, you can configure on Content DB which server should be used to run timer jobs for that Content DB, You can also specify on which server workflow timer jobs should run
    • SharePoint SQL Changes -  Most Service Applications (SA) will have their own database. You can force snapshots during backup, Browse through a Content DB that isn’t join to farm to find content to restore, Replace EBS from SharePoint 2010,
